»Sleeper Bus Trip to Backpack in Savage Gulf and Fiery Gizzard, TennesseeSleeper Bus Trip to Backpack in Savage Gulf and Fiery Gizzard, TennesseeWe're going EAST on this extended Memorial Day weekend--a first after forty years of Sierra Club bus trips! Our destination is South Cumberland State Park, an aggregation of sites in four counties. The Cumberland Plateau is a hilly upland region that stretches from eastern Kentucky to northern Alabama, west of the Smoky Mountains and Great Valley. We'll be east of Interstate 24, between Nashville and Chattanooga. All five hike options are in the Savage Gulf State Natural Area. ("Gulf" is a local term for a gorge.) Some hikes include a day in or on the rim of Fiery Gizzard, another deep gorge. April and May are the wet season, so the waterfalls and wildflowers should be near their peaks.
